When Joanna came to Dorcas Ministries for help with her light bill, she shared with the counselor that she was sick and tired of struggling to make ends meet. She said she felt like she could never get ahead, and when the smallest unexpected bill showed up, she went into a panic.
The counselor looked over her budget and agreed—it was tight, but she saw a few opportunities to cut back and challenged Joanna to consider starting a savings account. Joanna nearly shrieked, “Savings?? I don’t have enough money to live on! How can I save?” The counselor encouraged her to come to the next Financial Empowerment class at Dorcas Ministries to get the answers—to find small ways to save just a little and over time—first for emergencies and then for those larger ticket items that she needs.
Joanna was skeptical, but she came on the 2nd Wednesday of the month—and she met Brandy. Brandy gave her the PNC Foundations of Money Management book and shared with Joanna her own personal struggles and the path she took to overcome them. Simple tips like tracking your spending to find little ways to cut back or scheduling bill payments to avoid late payment fees were covered in the class.
Joanna learned a lot that night and wrote a thank you note to the crisis ministry counselor, saying “Thank you so much for making me take the Financial Empowerment class. I really didn’t think it would help and actually it has changed my life!”
PNC Bank presents Financial Empowerment classes the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 6pm to 8pm in the Dorcas Training Center, inside the Crisis Ministry at 187 High House Road. The next class will be held July 10th at 6 PM.
