Dorcas Ministries is fortunate to have over 300 dedicated and hard-working volunteers. We would like to thank each volunteer for supporting Dorcas Ministries and helping us make a difference in the Cary and Morrisville community.
Each month, we are going to introduce one of the many faces of Dorcas Ministries. Every volunteer contributes to our organization in different ways and we could not operate without each of them.
This month we would like you to meet Jeanette Evans.
Jeannette has been a volunteer with Dorcas Ministries since the founding of our organization. Over the 45 years she has volunteered with us, Jeanette has filled several roles, including Store Manager. Currently, she is a beloved cashier on Monday mornings. She is an active member at Cary 1st Christian Church.
Jeanette was kind enough to take some time and answer some questions about her time at Dorcas for us.
How long have you been at Dorcas Ministries?
“When it first started, since the beginning, I think it has been 45 years now.”
How did you get connected with Dorcas?
“Well, it wasn’t Dorcas when I first started working. We just labeled it Margaret Keller, she was the one who started it. We just had a place where we helped folks who needed it on the outside. It went on from there and that is when the Dorcas shop started.”
When you first started volunteering what were some things you did?
“Just helping in the store that we had, helping folks that needed it – that was the main thing back then. “
How did you get involved and find out about Dorcas?
“All three churches in Cary: Cary 1st Christian, Mount Zion, and First United Methodist Church. Volunteers came in and just did what needed to be done at the time. Then we grew to the Dorcas Shop and you know that Dorcas comes from the Bible (Acts 9:36). Then we just started moving and moving and growing and growing. So we come from a mighty long way. At that time, we weren’t paying anybody – everybody was a volunteer. “
Have you always volunteered on Monday mornings?
“For 16 years, I was the Store Manager. But after 16 years I said to myself it was time for somebody else to take over. So I stepped down to Assistant Store Manager.“
What does Dorcas Ministries mean to you?
“Everything. I love to help folks. I do what I can to help anyone.”
